Scholarship or Job Application Preparation

When filling out an application for a scholarship or job, consider the following:

  • Application Deadlines
The timelines in submitting your application cannot be over-emphasized! Aviation jobs and scholarships are a highly competitive, therefore, failure to meet a deadline is an way to eliminating candidates. Request your application as soon as possible and begin working on it immediately.
  • Questions
Do not hesitate to call the person in charge of reviewing the applications with questions. If you're not sure what they're asking for - DON'T GUESS!! - CALL!!
  • Completeness / Attention to Detail
It is important that your application package is completed in its entirety. Read the entire application and all accompanying literiture before filling out any of the forms. Pay attention to every detail. Follow the directions verbatim. Include all the material that is requested by the employer or the scholarship committee. If there are items on the forms that do not apply to you, enter N/A (not applicable) in the space provided.
  • Typing / Writing
If it is at all possible type your application and all accompanying letters or resumes. All signitures and handwritten portions should be in BLACK ink or # 2 pencil as required. Also, make copies of the application forms and practice filling them out to make sure the information fits neatly into the spaces provided.
  • Cleanliness
If your application becomes spoiled in any way (coffee stains, white out, mistakes) call and ask for another. Do not attempt to hide mistakes with white out or opaque tape!
  • Harmony and Balance
If at all possible, have letter(s) of recommendation tie into your own letter to the board, further emphasizing the points you want to highlight.
  • Proof Reading
Proof read your entire application package TEN TIMES. In addition, have someone else proof read it as well if possible. (Your mentor would be an excellent person to ask to proof read your application!)
  • Record Keeping
Save a copy of everything you did for yourself - that information will definitely come in handy for future applications and scholarships.
